The fine print
- What this compares. Your current average power bill of $229 a month against your solar payment of $146.70 a month, over 25 years. Utility escalated at 7.5% per year, solar at 2.99% per year.
- Still connected to the grid. You are still connected to the utility grid and would be expected to pay a small fixed monthly rate, considered the standard connection fee.
- Appalachian Power rates are moving. West Virginia regulators approved a 4 percent base rate increase effective June 1, 2026, about $4.84 a month for a residential customer using 1,000 kWh. Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power residential bills at that usage level have gone from $55.28 a month in 2006 to $176.42 a month in 2026. A further increase of about 12.1 percent on residential rates is pending before the Public Service Commission and has not been approved. Past increases do not guarantee future ones.
